ABOUT THE UNIVERSITY OF THE SACRED HEART (USH) By USH Project Director
University of the Sacred Heart (USH) is being initiated as a direct response to the devastating socio-economic and psychological needs of the people of Northern Uganda and Uganda at large inflicted by wars and civil strives.
The USH seeks, in its focus, to realign human dignity and values as central by Archbishop John Baptist Odama; of Gulu. It is a rein all human activities and relationships, to ensure sustainable peace and holistic development.
The University is being established at what has, hitherto, been the Catechist Training Centre. It will have programs directed towards community empowerment and rehabilitation through training professionals.
The USH is being established particularly so as to contribute more effectively to addressing the needs for faster and more meaningful healing, reconciliation, moral integrity and, re-building and changing the lives of people in post-conflict situations in Uganda and neighboring countries e.g. South Sudan,
Eastern Congo, etc. who have shared experiences of conflicts and war; and to promote and ensure quality higher education in Northern Uganda by raising standards in teaching and learning as well as developing unique academic programs to address identified needs in society.
The USH is therefore being established to address, both the short and long term, the effects of the war. These include, but are not limited to the psychosocial needs (trauma and its manifestations such as alcohol dependence, mental illness, domestic violence, suicide and lack of appreciation of the value of human life.), challenges of re-integration, poverty and development.
